The State of California recently announced that it will end the practice of keeping prison inmates of different races in separate quarters. Hello! The Supreme Court ended segregation more than 50 years ago in Brown vs. Board of Education.
The rationale has been that it reduced violence.
Having operated a re-entry and drug treatment program for the past 15 years with people who have just been released from California prisons and jails, I have not embraced that philosophy. Although we focus on the high incarceration rate in the African-American community, we have never turned away any ex-offender willing to commit to our restoration strategy.
Today, our residential facilities are completely integrated and race does not come up as an issue. Our prisons are behind the times.
